Vietnam’s national standard system (TCVN) currently has nearly 13,000 standards, approximately 60% of which have been harmonised with international and regional standards, contributing to effectively supporting socio-economic development in many fields.

Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Le Xuan Dinh made the statement during a ceremony held by the Directorate for Standards, Metrology and Quality (STAMEQ) (under the Ministry of Science and Technology – MOST) on October 14 to observe the 50th anniversary of the World Standards Day (Oct 14).

This year’s theme of “Protecting the planet with standards” highlighted the protection of the environment through the implementation of standards to save energy, the use of less polluting vehicles, the management of waste, and the recycling of materials.

Vietnam has been making positive contributions in the development of international standards, especially those related to the country’s key products, Dinh said, adding that the STAMEQ has established 139 technical standards committees (TSCs), with more than 1,100 experts engaged in the building of national and international standards in various areas.

As an official member of the three leading standardisation organisations, including the ISO, IEC and ITU, Vietnam will continue to actively participate in the process of developing international standards so that Vietnamese products can reach out to the world market in a stronger manner, he emphasised. Furthermore, Vietnam will step up the building and application of national and international standards as a foundation for enterprises’ production and business activities and to protect the legitimate interests of consumers.

At the ceremony, the organisers honoured national TSCs as well as organisations and individuals who have made significant contributions to the building and completion of the national standard system.
