ABSTRACT Diesel-based power generation is popular on an island (where located far from the nation electrical grid). Wind energy is potential source contributed to remote area power systems (RAPS) on islands. A possible solution to mitigate the wind power fluctuations is integrated energy storage systems (ESS) to the wind turbine (WT). The supercapacitor ESS (SCESS) is able to smooth out the output power of wind turbine by exchanging bidirectional power between wind turbine and supercapacitor through power conversion system. In order to reduce the impact from these fluctuations a filter was implemented in the feed forward path of the control system. This filter cuts off the unwanted high frequency fluctuations from the output. Supercapacitor energy storage systems have the ability to stabilize grid frequency in RAPS via controlled bidirectional active power exchanging process. Simulations validate the effectiveness of the proposed control. Keywords: Remote area power systems, wind energy conversion systems, diesel-generator set, energy storage systems. |
